Pinacoteca Luz Building
The Pinacoteca de São Paulo, a museum of the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the State of São Paulo, presents the exhibition Lenora de Barros: minha língua, which occupies the three temporary galleries on the second floor of the Pinacoteca Luz. Curated by Pollyana Quintella, the exhibition has a conceptual cut that focuses on works that discuss the relationship between body and language, in an arc that aggregates from works from the beginning of her career to a commissioning produced especially for the occasion, including iconic productions such as Poema (1979) and the series Procuro-me (2003). Gathering around 40 works of the visual artist from São Paulo, who uses photography, video, installation, and performance as support, the show brings together pieces such as Homage to George Segal (1975-2014) - an emblematic work of her production, the result of a school project that criticized the consumer society taking as inspiration the expressions of the works of the sculptor of the same name, as well as presenting a new work commissioned especially for the show entitled The face. The tongue. The belly (2022), a video composed of three acts (in b&w and color) in which Lenora explores different situations with clay in dialogue with her own body, based on signifiers that already make up the repertoire of her work, such as the expressive face, the ambiguous tongue (at once organ and language), and the female belly.
The exhibition was organized in close dialogue with the exhibition Pinacoteca: Collection - which consists of a new exhibition of the museum's collection, to be inaugurated in October 2020, taking into account that in 2022 the country will celebrate the centennial of the Week of Modern Art and the bicentennial of its Independence. "This is a propitious occasion, as the institution proposes, to take a critical look at the legacy of the modernists and ask ourselves what history of Brazilian art we want to tell," says Jochen Volz, the general director of the Pinacoteca.
One of the highlights is the work Poema (1979), which is part of the museum's collection, donation of the Patrons of Contemporary Art of the Pinacoteca de São Paulo 2018. A kind of synthesis of numerous questions that the artist investigates, the work consists of a photographic series in six acts that document an intimate and conflicting encounter between body and machine.
The exhibition Lenora de Barros: minha língua is sponsored by Bradesco.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual catalog, a video with the participation of the curator and artist, and a virtual tour.
