For Rotas Brasileiras 2024, Gomide&Co is pleased to present Rotas de Afeto [Routes of Affection], a project conceived by Lenora de Barros (1953) based on the visual and affective intertwining of her works and those of her father, Geraldo de Barros (1923–1998). Sometimes unexpected, the approximations arise from the artist's reflection on her father's production, offering a new, more intimate look at the possible relationships between them.
One of the main conceptual axes runs through the period between the late 1940s and the 1950s and 60s, when Geraldo de Barros came into contact with and developed an interest in Gestalt Theory, the Bauhaus and the Ulm School of Design, as well as leading figures from the Russian avant-garde, such as the poet Vladímir Maiakóvski (1893–1930) and the artists El Lissitzky (1890–1941) and Aleksandr Rodchenko (1891–1956). The period coincides with Lenora de Barros' childhood and was fundamental to her upbringing in many ways. So the selection includes, for example, furniture designed by Geraldo de Barros at Unilabor (1954–1961) and Hobjeto (1964–1989) whose structures are often similar to those present in Ping-poems (1990–ongoing) and other works by Lenora de Barros.
Creating formal and conceptual approximations, the selection also includes peers and collaborators who influenced the practice of both artists, such as Augusto de Campos (1931), a seminal visual poet in the field of visual and concrete poetry in Brazil, Max Bill (1908–1994), Josef Albers (1888–1976), and others.
