Alex Cerveny's approach to painting does not end in the order of the symbolic, but in the pure interlocution between the different references that its surfaces evoke. Feeding on the history of art, religions and their inevitable blasphemies, literature, music, and the contemporary culture of newspapers and soap operas, Cerveny has elaborated his own affective vocabulary that consolidates his memories and subjectivities through the fragmented composition of a liquid time. His series of 18 x 24 cm paintings in acrylic and oil are thought of as ex-votos, objects imbued with spiritual value, reappropriated by modernity through their exhibition value. As in the painting, they consolidate a spiritualized narrative present in the Brazilian popular imaginary.

In Bósforo (2022), an allusion to the Bosphorus strait that divides the city of Istanbul in half, inscribing the idea of East and West, is accomplished. Human history is marked by the strive to move forward, ahead, and the attempt to organize human experience within a possible scale of apprehension. In Bósforo, the human figure attempts to cross the strait, but drowns, or at least despairs at the possibility. The reference to Istanbul is not gratuitous either: ancient Constantinople marks the dissolution of the Roman Empire, inscribing this symbolism as a key to the reading. The "drowned one", the figure half mermaid, half castaway, is swallowed by the channel, just as History, here with a capital H, swallows humanity.
