Formally speaking, his oeuvre shares commonalities with that of Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988), both in the influence from Brancusi (1876-1957) as it relates to synthesis, repetition and verticality, and in the coupling solutions, juxtapositions, and the balancing interplay of organic and structural modules seen especially in the former’s 1950s work. Imaginarily, he converses with Giacometti, both in written letters and in very tall sculptures made from iron rods with ceramic elements on their ends, the “fruits of the earth.” Technically speaking – in the use of cast clay and experimentation with cold painting and other synthetic materials – and in the convergence of painting and sculpture, Megumi’s groundbreaking work in Brazil finds foreign peers in the likes of Ron Nagel (1939) and Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011).
