[EN]

Lygia Pape became involved with the vocabulary of the concrete art movement as a member of the Grupo Frente (1954-57), a coalition of artists who practiced a tendency towards abstraction based on geometric shapes and pure colors. Her works from the Relevo series are an important example of Pape's involvement with this group. Compositions that follow a rigid and methodical system, the Relevo’s have an affinity with industrial patterns. From a technical perspective, the work appears to be machine-cut and the colors on the sides of the pieces contrast with those on the front. Emphasizing the optical effect of the composition and with the reliefs wanting to escape the plane, Pape's works question the two-dimensional conventions of the picture plane.

[PT]
