Sonia Gomes' work stems from the artist's personal restlessness, which unfolds in her handicrafts, “erupting when she instinctively overcomes the limitations imposed on what is part of the handicraft register, in terms of use, form and function,” as Solange Farkas points out. Gomes connection with fabric comes from her early childhood in Caetanópolis, a town close to the Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Cedro e Cachoeira [Cedro and Cachoeira Spinning and Fabric Company], the first fabric factory in Minas Gerais. At this time, Gomes lived with her maternal grandmother. A midwife and healer, her grandmother was a holder of popular traditions with African roots.

Sonia Gomes' work is based on materials such as fabrics, threads, yarns and objects. Along with the layers of fabrics and trims, techniques - weaving, embroidery, lace, sewing - and memories merge: dresses, curtains, towels and various fabrics that people, known or not, send to her studio and are transformed into abstract bodies by the artist's hands.

A obra de Sonia Gomes nasce de uma inquietação pessoal da artista que se desdobra no fazer manual, “eclodindo ao ultrapassar, institivamente, as limitações impostas àquilo que é do registro do artesanato, por uso, forma, função”, conforme aponta Solange Farkas. Sua conexão com o tecido vem da primeira infância, em Caetanópolis, cidade próxima à Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Cedro e Cachoeira, primeira fábrica de tecidos de Minas Gerais. Neste período, Gomes vivia com a avó materna. Parteira e benzedeira, sua avó era detentora das tradições populares de raiz africana.

A produção de Sonia Gomes se desenvolve a partir de materiais como tecidos, linhas, fios e objetos. Junto com as camadas de tecidos e aviamentos, fundem-se técnicas — tecelagem, bordado, renda, costura — e memórias: vestidos, cortinas, toalhas e tecidos diversos que pessoas, conhecidas ou não, enviam para seu ateliê e se transformam em corpos abstratos pelas mãos da artista.
