Not only in Brazilian historiography, but also internationally, Francisco Brennand (1927-2019) left a legacy through a ceramic and pictorial production, dialoguing with themes such as universality, nature, eternity and the origin of life. Mythological themes of Brazilian flora and fauna have also marked the artist's production. His works extend beyond the field of art, crossing human and philosophical issues, becoming one of Brazil's great visual narrators. In transforming the family's old ceramics factory into a temple, Brennand did not seek the beauty and sacred of the Egyptians and Greeks, but the "ugly" as the other face of mystery, affirming the damnation of beauty. Among so many works that are imperfect in baking and rough in finishing, it is possible to perceive the disturbing and dramatic imagery that constantly crosses and evokes the limits of reality and delirium. Working not only with form but also with color, Brennand's murals present terrifying and monstrous creatures along with abstract elements. In other works, it is possible to identify phallic figures in the presentation of totems, with a strongly sexual character.

PT
