In Trois tas de charbon the motif of unstructured chaos could symbolize an epoch, marked by the gradual closing of the Belgian coal mines and the implosion of a social and economic system, but also by the reality of the new consumer society. In "J'attends ton coup de fil, Marcel!", a fictitious dialogue between Broodthaers and Pierre Restany dating from 1967, Broodthaers wrote: "The nineteenth century produced an excess of coal. We know the result, in terms of public transport, heating, carbon chemistry. Our Second Industrial Revolution in the twentieth century produced an excess of information and visual solicitations."
