Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900-1995), ao comentar sobre seu processo criativo, declara: “Eu tenho que ver a paisagem, as coisas. Se não vejo, não pinto.”[1] E o artista, a propósito, viu muito: nasceu e morreu praticamente junto com o século XX. Ainda que tenha acompanhado fatos históricos relevantes, o artista decidiu dedicar sua pintura a motivos triviais abordados com originalidade e vigor. Assim, como podemos notar em suas obras, seu vocabulário se constitui de poentes, montanhas, fachadas, árvores, rios, naturezas-mortas e congêneres.

Se as favelas são o canteiro de obra da contradição moderna do pintor, as paisagens oferecem sua paleta formal e filiação, e ajudam a contextualizá-lo melhor no meio local. Os elementos em suas paisagens também derivam da tradição pré-impressionista e impressionista, a qual teve contato em seu período na Europa. Como apontado por Rodrigo Moura[2], de Van Gogh podemos identificar afinidade com as texturas; de Cézanne, um apuro pelo estudo analítico da paisagem – como seus croquis feitos em maços de cigarro confirmam –; de Monet, o apreço pelos efeitos luminosos.

Em meio às paisagens, entre obras de caráter figurativo e narrativo e trabalhos em que as figuras estão presentes de maneiras difusas – ressaltando um jogo entre formas e cores e um flerte com a abstração – seus crepúsculos são dignos de nota. Lorenzato os pinta com tons fortes num gradiente de cores entre alaranjados, vermelhos e amarelos, e diferentes constituições entre matas e céus que o cercam. Esses poentes também nos remetem imediatamente ao fenômeno da inversão térmica causado pela poluição nas grandes cidades. Não são, portanto, paisagens idílicas, mas paisagens que, por mais que inanimadas, evocam também a crescente urbanização da capital mineira. Seu interesse no pôr do sol é vasto, e por ele se sucedem trabalhos com combinações cromáticas fortes. As nuvens são protagonistas desses trabalhos, assumindo formas orgânicas e se fundindo com o seu entorno. Essas fusões se dão com as “raspadas” de Lorenzato, que com movimentos gestuais criava a comunicação das diferentes tintas através de seus pentes.

É sabido que as caminhadas do artista nos seus arredores constituem um notável campo criativo, uma espécie de ateliê expandido. É também interessante como o pintor alastra sua paisagem: chega ao oceâno, ultrapassando as fronteiras das Minas Gerais e ilustrando paisagens litorâneas sudestinas, com as escarpas monumentais ao fundo das paisagens. Valendo-se de tons de azulados e esverdeados em sobreposição, essas pinturas litorâneas têm o mar, a areia e as rochas se apresentando em diferentes planos e criando texturas que produzem jogos sofisticados entre luz e sombra, gesto e efeito, topografia e imagem.

Commenting on his creative process, Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato (1900-1995) said: "I have to see the landscape, the things. If I don't see, I don't paint."[1] And the artist, by the way, saw a lot: he was born and died practically along with the 20th century. Even though he followed relevant historical events, the artist decided to dedicate his painting to trivial motifs that were addressed with originality and vigor. Thus, as we can see in his works, his vocabulary consists of sunsets, mountains, façades, trees, rivers, still lifes and related subjects.

If the favelas are the construction site of the painter's modern contradiction, the landscapes offer his formal palette and affiliation, and help to better contextualize him within the local environment. The elements in his landscapes also derive from the pre-impressionist and impressionist tradition, of which he got acquainted during his time in Europe. As Rodrigo Moura[2] has pointed out, we can identify an affinity with Van Gogh's textures; with Cézanne, a keenness for the analytical study of the landscape – as his sketches on cigarette packs confirm –; with Monet, an appreciation for luminous effects.

Among the landscapes, from figurative and narrative works and the ones in which figures are depicted in diffuse ways – highlighting a play between forms and colors and thus flirting with abstraction – his twilights are noteworthy. Lorenzato paints them with strong tones in a gradient of colors between orange, red and yellow, and the different forests and skies constitutions that surround him. These sunsets also immediately remind us of the thermal inversion phenomenon caused by pollution in big cities. They are not, therefore, idyllic landscapes, but landscapes that, however inanimate, evoke the growing urbanization of the capital of Minas Gerais. His interest in sunsets is vast, enabling him to create works of strong chromatic combinations. The clouds are the protagonists of these works, taking on organic forms while merging with the surroundings. These fusions take place with Lorenzato's "scrapes", where gestural movements are created from the communication of the different paints through the use of combs.

It is well known that the artist's walks in his surroundings constitute a remarkable creative field, a kind of expanded studio. It's also interesting to mention how the painter spreads throughout the landscape: he reaches the ocean, surpassing the borders of Minas Gerais and illustrating coastal landscapes from the southeast, and the monumental scarps in the background. Using overlapping shades of blue and green, these coastal paintings show the sea, sand and rocks on different planes, creating textures that produce sophisticated plays between light and shadow, gesture and effect, topography and image.
