SP–Arte 2024

Pavilhão da Bienal, April 3 - 7, 2024
Booth A02

For SP—Arte 2024, the edition commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fair, Gomide&Co is pleased to present a special project featuring a set of ukiyo-e woodcuts from the collection of the artist Massao Okinaka (Japan, 1913 – Brazil, 2000). Okinaka acquired the set between the late 1920s and early 1930s, brought it with him to Brazil in 1932, and kept it throughout his life. After his death in 2000, the set was inherited and looked after by his family and shown only on two occasions: A arte do Ukiyo-e – A tradição da gravura japonesa (Museu Afro Brasil, São Paulo, 2014) and Massao Okinaka: Mirar allò visible i invisible (MuVIM – Museu Valencià de la Il-Lutració i de la Modernitat, Valencia, 2016).

Concurrently with the project, the main booth at Gomide&Co features a special selection of works that converse with ukiyo-e tradition by the likes of León Ferrari (1920-2013), Kazuya Sakai (1927-2001), Megumi Yuasa (1938), and Rirkrit Tiravanija (1961). The selection also includes work by major artists from the gallery’s stable, such as: Advânio Lessa, whose first solo show in São Paulo is being hosted by the gallery; Maria Lira Marques, whose first institutional career retrospective is taking place at the Instituto Tomie Ohtake; and Julia Isidrez and Amadeo Luciano Lorenzato, both of whom have been confirmed for the 60th of La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Adriano Pedrosa.
